Airport and Intralogistics Systems

From the check-in desk to baggage reclaim: design, construction, maintenance and the modernisation of complete airport infrastructures

>> Introduction

Budapest Airport partner
for nearly 20 years

Navipro has worked as a technology partner of Budapest Airport (BUD) since 2009. We are proud that during nearly two decades of continuous cooperation we have been able to deliver countless exciting projects. The most significant is the 2.8 km intralogistics and baggage handling system of Terminal 2. In projects like these, our engineering team takes part in the whole process: from the first concept drawings through physical installation and software integration to daily maintenance and continuous expansion of the system. We have a long-term, 24/7 PLC software maintenance framework contract with the airport.

Professional design and reliable operation are of key importance for airport infrastructure: these systems can qualify as critical infrastructure from a national security point of view, while even the smallest modifications require thorough consideration. During the design phase our engineering team runs numerous simulations and, as a result, a custom digital twin (simulation model) of the airport's entire baggage conveying system is created, on which every planned modification and extension can be modelled and validated in advance.

Renewing the BUD T2 baggage handling system

In this project, the Navipro team designed, simulated and installed the intralogistics system of nearly 2.8 kilometres. Some elements of the conversion had to be installed during live operation, which posed a particular logistical and engineering challenge. During the conversion we installed more than three hundred new system elements, and the work also included STD3 (EU-compliant, CT-based screening of checked baggage) and CCAR migration: while the system was in operation, we designed and installed four Standard 3 level XCT screening units in the T2 baggage handling system.

Extension of baggage reclaim carousels

Next to the A and B reclaim carousels installed earlier in the BUD Sky-Court section, we designed and installed a new carousel. In total, we handed over five new reclaim systems, including the design and installation of roller shutters and fire doors by the belts.

Check-in desks and self-service kiosks03

Check-in capacity expansion and self-service desks

In BUD's passenger area we expanded the existing check-in capacity in several rounds and took part in integrating self-service check-in desks (self check-in). The check-in desks and conveyors we designed and manufactured ourselves have run reliably in live traffic for years: in 2025 BUD served 19.6 million passengers.

Boarding bridge upgrades

Recently we carried out the complete modernisation of seven obsolete, US-made passenger boarding bridges. The work included development of custom control PLC software, establishing new standards compliance, building new concrete foundations and physically relocating the bridges. The implementation used Siemens control, Sick, Siemens and Pilz sensors, and Lapp cabling. In preparation for future requirements we developed a modern in-house bridge control system, which with further development could be the basis for boarding bridges of our own manufacture.
